Recently the global e-bike market was forecasted to explode from $25 billion in 2020 to around $48 billion by 2028, doubling the value it was predicted to reach before the pandemic. People are looking to add more outdoor exercise to their lifestyle habits while also hopefully decreasing automobiles from their daily commute. Beyond the the clear health benefits, a recent study revealed the expense of owning an electric bike (e.g., charging, tune-ups, tires, etc.) to be just over $300 per year. Annual car maintenance costs more than eight times that amount.

At this price point no one wants a cookie-cutter bike, and the Radiant Carbon is anything but. Designed by one of the legendary designers in the industry, the Radiant Carbon’s full-carbon frame and alloy fork epitomize form-meets-function: While the frame certainly looks like nothing else out there—a signature single chainstay, seatstay and fork arm—it’s designed with fewer tubes that allows for the existing tubes to be larger in diameter.

]]>If you've been big into mountain biking in the last 30 years, you probably know the name Tony Ellsworth. Beginning in 1991, Ellsworth built and designed some of the most radical and forward-thinking mountain bikes on the market, many of which landed in professional racing, including at events like the Red Bull Rampage. He was one of the first to work with carbon fiber as a frame material.
Ellsworth’s mountain bike business wound down about five years ago, but he was far from done designing innovative cycles and in 2017, he decided to go in a new direction: electric bicycles. Now, his initial vision is complete with the reveal of the Radiant Carbon series under his new brand name, The Ride.

]]>This seems to be the case with one of the freshest designs around, the Radiant Carbon. It’s simply an e-bike. But using the word ‘simply’ to describe this particular e-bike wouldn’t be doing it justice. First off, it’s a design by legendary bike producer Tony Ellsworth for The Ride bike manufacturer. If you don’t know anything about this custom bike shop, get to it as you won’t be let down.

]]>Tony Ellsworth started designing his first mountain bikes back in the 1990s for his wife. Eventually, he started making bikes for others, and before long, the Ellsworth bike brand was formed. He started making cruisers under the name The Ride in 2006.
Fast-forward to today where he has fully embraced e-bikes, and his first entry in the category is The Ride Radiant Carbon, which features a full carbon and an asymmetric frame with an aluminum asymmetric fork. The radical-looking bike is spec’d with a Shimano E6100 mid-drive motor and a Gates carbon belt that drives a Nuvinci Enviolo SP automatic CVT (continuously variable transmission).

]]>More time aboard the Tony Ellsworth’s creation confirmed my suspicions from my short ride almost a year ago: The Radiant Carbon is an innovative and distinctive offering in the ebike world. The design is unique and the performance capabilities make it a good choice for anyone looking for a solid bike for the long haul. The long-distance assist capabilities make it a great choice for commuters looking to leave their car at home and not having to worry about finding an outlet at work to charge it up. If simplicity and stunning design are high on your list of ebike attributes, the Radiant Carbon is your bike.
I enjoyed my time on it and my friend and the bike’s owner, Kent Lewis, also understands how an ebike can change up your transportation dynamic - even for a guy who was already commuting on a regular bicycle. "I enjoyed commuting on my cross bike for the past decade, but The Ride gets me to my office and meetings around town quickly and without breaking a sweat,” Lewis told Forbes.com. “The bonus of this particular ebike is that it looks good and is enjoyable to ride. I rarely use my commuter bike anymore."
